As Administration Hikes EU Auto Tariffs to 25%, Small Business Coalition Warns Continued Tariff Threats Will Blunt Economic Impact of IEEPA Refunds

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- May 1, 2026 -- Following President Trump's announcement today that he will raise tariffs on cars and trucks from the European Union to 25% next week, Dan Anthony, Executive Director of We Pay the Tariffs — a coalition of nearly 1,200 small businesses — issued the following statement:

"New tariffs on European cars explain why many small businesses expect to be cautious with IEEPA refunds. You never know what might trigger the next tariff threat. That caution means fewer new jobs for American workers and rising costs for families. These knee-jerk tariff announcements further an economic status quo that is deeply unpopular."

Today's announcement raises the tariff on EU autos and trucks from the 15% rate set under last year's Turnberry Agreement to 25%, marking the latest in a series of tariff actions that have continued even as the IEEPA refund process plays out.
